Canada Study Permit Extension

If your studies in Canada will continue beyond the expiry date of your current study permit, you may need to apply for a study permit extension before your status expires.

An extension application is not simply a request for “more time.” Your current enrolment, academic progress, financial circumstances, future studies and any changes to your school or program may affect what application is required.

Anka Canada Immigration Consulting can review your current status and study plans, identify the appropriate application and help address potential issues before filing.

Services are provided by Volkan Sacilik, RCIC-IRB, CICC Licence No. R1042981.

When Do You Need to Extend Your Study Permit?

If your study permit will expire before you complete your program, you must apply to extend your stay as a student if you want to continue studying in Canada.

IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your study permit expires. Your study permit also cannot normally be extended beyond the validity of your passport.

Checking the correct expiry date early can help avoid unnecessary status problems.

What If You Apply Before Your Permit Expires?

If you submit an eligible extension application before your study permit expires, you can generally remain in Canada while IRCC processes the application.

Where you continue studying under the conditions of your existing permit, you may also be able to continue your studies while waiting for a decision. This is commonly referred to as maintained status.

However, the effect of maintained status depends on what application was submitted and whether your circumstances have changed.

What If You Are Changing Schools or Programs?

A change in studies does not always require the same immigration steps.

If you remain at the same post-secondary DLI and change programs, you may be able to continue studying with your existing permit, depending on its conditions.

However, post-secondary students changing to a different DLI generally need to apply for a new study permit by extending their current permit and obtain approval before beginning studies at the new school, subject to limited exceptions. A new PAL/TAL may also be required.

This is one reason it is useful to assess the immigration consequences of a school or program change before making the change.

What Does an Extension Application Need to Show?

The application should demonstrate that you continue to meet the requirements to study in Canada.

Depending on your circumstances, relevant evidence may include:

  • current enrolment and academic progress;

  • a new or updated letter of acceptance;

  • the expected completion date of your studies;

  • financial resources for continued studies and living expenses;

  • passport and current immigration documents;

  • an explanation of any change in program, school or study timeline.

The documents should also be consistent with your previous applications and your actual activities in Canada.

What If Your Study Permit Has Already Expired?

If your permit expired before you submitted an extension application, you generally lose your student status and must stop studying.

You may be eligible to apply for restoration of status as a student, normally within 90 days of losing status, if you meet the applicable requirements. You cannot resume studies until your status has been restored and a new study permit has been issued.

An expired permit therefore requires a different assessment from a routine extension filed on time.

Common Issues to Watch For

Study permit extensions can become more complicated when:

  • the application is filed too close to or after the expiry date;

  • academic progress or gaps in studies require explanation;

  • the student changes DLIs without following the applicable process;

  • financial support is unclear;

  • passport validity limits the possible extension period;

  • previous application information does not match current documents.

Reviewing these issues before filing can help determine whether a standard extension is appropriate or whether another immigration step is required.

How Anka Canada Immigration Consulting Can Assist

Anka can assess whether a study permit is required, review the proposed institution and program from an immigration perspective, identify applicable PAL/TAL and financial requirements, and examine potential concerns before an application is submitted.

Where retained, we can also prepare the application, organize supporting documentation and present the applicant’s circumstances clearly and consistently.

The objective is not simply to submit forms, but to help ensure that the chosen study pathway and the immigration application fit the applicant’s actual circumstances and longer-term plans.

Important Information

Canadian immigration requirements and study-permit policies can change. The appropriate application depends on your individual circumstances and the rules in force at the relevant time. Information on this page is general and does not guarantee approval.
