Canada Visitor Record and Stay Extension
If you are already in Canada and need more time to remain as a visitor, you may need to apply for a visitor record before your current temporary resident status expires. A visitor record may also be relevant if you are finishing work or studies in Canada and want to remain temporarily as a visitor.
Anka Canada Immigration Consulting assists clients with reviewing their current status, identifying the correct expiry date and determining whether a visitor record is the appropriate application for their circumstances.
Services are provided by Volkan Sacilik, RCIC-IRB, CICC Licence No. R1042981.
What Is a Visitor Record?
A visitor record is a document that shows how long you are authorized to remain in Canada as a visitor and any conditions attached to your stay.
It is important to understand that a visitor record is not a visitor visa. It does not replace a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or eTA and does not, by itself, allow you to leave Canada and return.
Who May Need a Visitor Record?
A visitor record may be appropriate if you want to:
-
extend your stay in Canada as a visitor;
-
change from worker status to visitor status;
-
change from student status to visitor status;
-
remain temporarily in Canada for family, personal or other legitimate reasons.
The correct application depends on your present status and what you intend to do while remaining in Canada.
When Should You Apply?
A routine extension should be submitted before your current temporary resident status expires.
One common source of confusion is using the expiry date of a TRV instead of the expiry date of the person's actual status in Canada. These are not necessarily the same.
If your status has already expired, a regular extension may no longer be the correct application and restoration may need to be considered.
What Should the Application Explain?
A visitor extension should clearly explain:
-
why additional time in Canada is requested;
-
how long you intend to remain;
-
how your expenses will be covered;
-
where you will stay;
-
what you intend to do after the requested period ends.
The supporting documents should be consistent with your previous immigration history and your current activities in Canada.
When a Visitor Record May Not Be the Right Application
Visitor status does not authorize activities that require separate permission.
If you intend to continue working or begin studies that require a permit, a visitor record alone may not be sufficient. Similarly, someone outside Canada who needs permission to travel to Canada may require a TRV or eTA instead.
This is why identifying the correct immigration application before filing can be as important as preparing the documents themselves.
Common Issues to Watch For
Visitor record applications can become more complicated when:
-
the wrong status-expiry date is used;
-
a long or repeated extension is requested without sufficient explanation;
-
financial support is unclear;
-
the applicant's activities do not match their immigration status;
-
previous applications or refusals are not disclosed consistently.
A careful review of status documents and immigration history can help identify these issues before an application is submitted.
How Anka Canada Immigration Consulting Can Assist
Anka can review your immigration documents and history, determine the relevant status deadline and assess whether a visitor record is the appropriate application. Where retained, we can also assist with preparing the application, organizing supporting evidence and presenting the purpose of the requested stay clearly and consistently.
The objective is to help you understand which application fits your circumstances and what issues should be addressed before filing, rather than simply preparing forms.
Important Information
Canadian immigration requirements and policies can change. The appropriate application depends on your individual circumstances and the rules in force at the relevant time. Information on this page is general and does not guarantee approval of any immigration application.
