Canada Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa)
Visiting Canada may look straightforward, but a strong visitor visa application needs to do more than show that you have a passport and enough money for a trip. It should clearly explain why you are travelling, how the visit will be funded, how long you intend to stay, and why your circumstances support a temporary visit to Canada.
Anka Canada Immigration Consulting assists individuals and families with visitor visa applications by reviewing the purpose of travel, identifying documentary gaps and presenting the application in a clear and consistent manner. Services are provided by Volkan Sacilik, RCIC-IRB, CICC Licence No. R1042981.
What Is a Canada Visitor Visa?
A visitor visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is the document placed in the passport of a visa-required traveller to show that they have met the requirements to travel to Canada. A valid visa allows you to travel to a Canadian port of entry, but it does not guarantee admission or determine exactly how long you may remain in Canada.
The length of your authorized stay is determined separately when you enter Canada. In many cases, visitors are admitted for up to six months, although a border services officer may authorize a shorter or longer period.
Do You Need a Visitor Visa, an eTA or a Visitor Record?
Not every traveller needs a visitor visa. Depending on your nationality, passport and method of travel, you may instead require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or may be exempt from either requirement. Some citizens of otherwise visa-required countries may also qualify for an eTA in specific circumstances.
A visitor record is different. It is generally used when a person already in Canada wants to extend their authorized stay as a visitor or change from worker or student status to visitor status. It is not a travel visa and does not replace a TRV or eTA for re-entry to Canada.
Who May Apply for a Visitor Visa?
Visitor visas are commonly used for purposes such as:
-
tourism and short holidays;
-
visiting family or friends;
-
attending certain business meetings or events;
-
short temporary visits for personal reasons.
However, the fact that your purpose is legitimate does not by itself establish eligibility. IRCC expects applicants to satisfy the applicable temporary-resident requirements, including having a valid travel document, sufficient financial resources and circumstances that support the conclusion that they will leave Canada at the end of the authorized stay.
What Does IRCC Look At?
There is no single document that guarantees a visitor visa.
The application is assessed as a whole. Depending on the circumstances, relevant considerations may include the purpose and duration of the proposed trip, financial circumstances, employment or business situation, family connections, travel history, previous immigration applications and the applicant’s overall ties outside Canada.
The supporting documents should tell a consistent story. A strong bank statement cannot correct an unclear travel purpose, just as an invitation letter does not by itself establish that a temporary visit is credible.
What Documents May Be Important?
The exact document package depends on the applicant and the reason for travel.
Common evidence may include proof of the purpose of the visit, proposed travel dates, accommodation arrangements, financial documentation, employment or business evidence, family information and, where relevant, an invitation from a person or organization in Canada. IRCC’s document requirements also vary according to the purpose of travel and the applicant’s circumstances.
When a Visitor Visa May Not Be the Right Application
A visitor visa is not appropriate for every temporary-residence situation.
For example, a person who intends to work in Canada may require work authorization, while longer-term studies may require a study permit. Someone already inside Canada who simply wants to remain longer as a visitor may need a visitor record rather than a new visitor visa. Identifying the correct application before filing is important because a TRV, eTA, visitor record, study permit and work permit serve different legal purposes.
Common Issues in Visitor Visa Applications
Applications can become more difficult when the proposed trip does not match the applicant’s financial or personal circumstances, the source of funds is unclear, previous refusals or immigration history are not properly disclosed, or different parts of the application contain inconsistent information.
A refusal in the past does not automatically prevent a new application, but a new submission should normally address the issues that led to the earlier decision rather than simply repeat the same evidence.
How Anka Canada Immigration Consulting Can Assist
Anka can assess whether a visitor visa is the appropriate application, review your immigration history and supporting evidence, identify issues that may require explanation, prepare the application and represent you before IRCC within the scope of the retainer.
The objective is not to create a stronger story than the facts support, but to ensure that the relevant facts and documents are presented accurately, consistently and clearly.
Important Information
Canadian immigration requirements and policies may change, and the appropriate application strategy depends on the individual circumstances of each applicant. Information on this page is general in nature and does not constitute a guarantee that an application will be approved.
