Canada Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing applications for several federal economic immigration programs. It is not a permanent residence program by itself. Instead, eligible candidates create a profile, enter the Express Entry pool and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply can then submit a permanent residence application.

Because eligibility for the pool and competitiveness within the pool are two different questions, a useful first step is understanding which Express Entry program you qualify under, how your CRS score is calculated and whether another immigration pathway should also be considered.

Anka Canada Immigration Consulting assists applicants with assessing Express Entry eligibility, reviewing CRS factors and preparing Express Entry profiles and post-ITA permanent residence applications.

Services are provided by Volkan Sacilik, RCIC-IRB, CICC Licence No. R1042981.

How Does Express Entry Work?

The process generally begins by determining whether you meet the requirements of at least one Express Entry program.

If eligible, you can create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool. IRCC assigns the profile a CRS score and conducts different types of invitation rounds. Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) currently have 60 days to submit the permanent residence application.

Being eligible to enter the pool does not guarantee that you will receive an invitation.

Which Programs Are Managed Through Express Entry?

Express Entry currently manages three federal programs:

For eligible skilled workers with qualifying Canadian work experience.

For eligible skilled workers with qualifying Canadian or foreign work experience.

For eligible workers qualified in designated skilled trades.

Each program has its own requirements for factors such as work experience, language ability and, where applicable, education or employment qualifications.

What Is the CRS Score?

Once an eligible profile enters the pool, candidates are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System.

CRS points can reflect factors such as:

  • age;

  • education;

  • official-language ability;

  • Canadian and foreign work experience;

  • spouse or partner factors, where applicable;

  • provincial nomination;

  • certain additional factors recognized by the Express Entry system.

A strong CRS score can improve the possibility of receiving an invitation, but invitation thresholds and draw types change over time.

An Express Entry assessment should therefore consider both program eligibility and realistic competitiveness in the pool.

Category-Based Express Entry Rounds

IRCC also conducts category-based selection rounds.

For 2026, current categories include French-language proficiency and selected occupational or experience categories such as health care and social services, STEM, trades, education, transport, physicians with Canadian work experience, senior managers with Canadian work experience, researchers with Canadian work experience and skilled military recruits.

Candidates must still qualify for one of the three Express Entry programs before they can be considered under a category-based round.

Because categories and eligibility criteria can change, they should be checked against the rules in force when the profile is created or updated.

Provincial Nomination and Express Entry

Some Provincial Nominee Program streams are aligned with Express Entry.

An eligible candidate who accepts an Express Entry-linked provincial nomination currently receives 600 additional CRS points, which can substantially change the candidate’s position in the pool.

However, provincial programs have their own eligibility rules and selection priorities, so being in the Express Entry pool does not automatically make someone eligible for a provincial nomination.

Why Accuracy in the Express Entry Profile Matters

Information entered into an Express Entry profile is later compared with the documents submitted after an ITA.

Issues can arise when:

  • work experience does not match the claimed NOC;

  • dates or hours of employment are inconsistent;

  • language or education information is entered incorrectly;

  • spouse or family information is incomplete;

  • CRS points are claimed without supporting evidence;

  • changes in circumstances are not updated.

IRCC assesses the permanent residence application against the information in the profile, program eligibility and admissibility requirements.

For this reason, reviewing the profile carefully before entering the pool or accepting an invitation can help identify issues before they become part of the permanent residence application.

How Anka Canada Immigration Consulting Can Assist

Anka can assess which Express Entry program may apply, review your work experience and NOC classification, calculate and verify relevant CRS factors and identify other pathways that may deserve consideration.

Where retained, we can also prepare the Express Entry profile and, after an ITA, prepare and submit the permanent residence application with supporting documentation and representative submissions.

The objective is to ensure that the immigration pathway, profile information and supporting evidence are consistent from the beginning of the Express Entry process through the permanent residence application.

Important Information

Express Entry rules, invitation categories and CRS thresholds can change over time. Eligibility and the appropriate strategy depend on individual circumstances and the rules in force at the relevant time.

This information reflects publicly available immigration rules as of September 27, 2026 and is provided for general informational purposes only. It does not guarantee eligibility, an invitation to apply or permanent residence approval.

Considering Express Entry for Permanent Residence?

A consultation can help determine which Express Entry program may apply, review your CRS factors and identify issues or alternative pathways that should be considered before creating or updating your profile.
